Athletic won – despite double expulsions

Athletic had to finish with nine players.
Nevertheless, it was a victory against Getafe with 2-0.

Athletic Bilbao defeated Getafe 2-0 after double goals from Inaki Williams.

But that was not the most remarkable thing. Because that was all the expulsions the away team from the Basque Country got.

The first sending off came just over a quarter of an hour into the second half. Yeray Álvarez slipped in midfield as “last man” and in the same act he stopped a deep pass with his hand, otherwise a Getafe player would have been freed. The verdict was an immediate red card.

In the 72nd minute, Aitor Paredes was cautioned. Just seven minutes later, the centre-back received his second warning for a tackle and he had to go and shower prematurely.

It didn’t end there.

With just over five minutes left of regular time, Getafe received a penalty for a hand situation. Then Athletics coach Ernesto Valverde’s top cap blew and he was awarded a red.

The penalty kick burned Mason Greenwood and the match ended 2-0.

Athletic are fifth in La Liga while Getafe are in tenth place.
