Tottenham Hotspur secured a much-needed win in the Premier League (PL) as they convincingly beat Newcastle United 4-1. This result was made even sweeter for Spurs as they avenged their defeats in both of last season’s head-to-head clashes.
Right from the start, both teams displayed their attacking threat, but it was the defenses that initially came out on top. Richarlison was denied by well-timed interventions from Bruno Guimarães and Fabian Schär, while Ben Davies made a vital touch on Anthony Gordon’s cross to deny Alexander Isak a simple finish.
However, Newcastle’s center-backs were struggling physically, and Tottenham’s persistence paid off in the 26th minute. Destiny Udogie played the ball out to Heung-min Son, who then drifted into the box to score his first-ever Premier League goal. The hosts’ control over the game continued to grow, but Pape Matar Sarr missed an opportunity to double their lead, mishandling his shot with three teammates ready to convert from Brennan Johnson’s cross.
Despite conceding possession cheaply, Johnson was given a reprieve when Guglielmo Vicario comfortably held Miguel Almirón’s tame shot. Spurs finally got their all-important second goal when Son outmaneuvered Kieran Trippier and cut the ball back for Richarlison, who marked his first start in six games with a goal.
Newcastle showed improvements after the break, moving the ball well and putting pressure on the hosts with Trippier providing crosses into the box. However, Spurs stood strong and struck at the right moment. A superb pass from Pedro Porro found Richarlison, who calmly finished for his second goal of the game. This was a significant achievement for Richarlison, who had only scored one Premier League goal all season.
With the momentum on their side, Tottenham continued to threaten. Brennan Johnson and Son came close to scoring quickfire goals, while Pedro Porro’s audacious attempt found the back of the net. In the dying moments of the game, Martin Dúbravka brought Son down in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty that the captain himself took and fired into the bottom corner. This capped off a brilliant day’s work for Spurs as they ended their five-game winless run.
The result also sees Tottenham maintain their position in fifth place, ahead of Newcastle. The Magpies managed to get a consolation goal through Joelinton but have only secured five points in away Premier League matches this season. This tally is only worsened by Luton Town and Sheffield United.
Tottenham Hotspur’s victory over Newcastle United was a statement of intent. The team displayed their attacking prowess and capitalized on their opponent’s weaknesses. This win not only boosts their confidence but also solidifies their position in the Premier League standings. With this performance, Spurs have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the league.
